Production & Soundtrack Blog

Pre Production
03/11/14 - 24/11/14
I have decided that my documentary will be about my dad helping abandoned animals, I have made my proposal and treatment for it. I decided on who I would interview then for the rest of that week got agreements from them & got location agreements from my Dad for home and the Head Teacher for the school.

After pitching my idea it was voted against and the idea developed into being about me, my Dad and our relationship I beginned planning how it would happen and look. I started by creating a new proposal to fit my new idea. After finishing I created my questions for interviews and Vox Pop.

We got put into our teams for the documentaries, I got camera for Liam, sound for Richard and Liam got sound for me and Richard got camera.

Production
25/11/14
Today began filming for the documentary we decided to start of our filming we would do our vox pops in Stockton, I got a 4, Liam got 3, Richard got 0. It started to rain so we went back to College and I filmed an interview for Liam's documentary.

26/11/14
Today we tried filming vox pops again but kept getting rejected so after trying for so long we decided to get some cutaways and then go back to College, we captured what we had filmed so far and checked that it all looked good.

27/11/14
Because vox pops weren't going our way, today we filmed my interviews with Richard and Liam we filmed them in the green room but used a standard background and not the green screen itself.

28/11/14
Today was our first day actually out on a location to film Richard's interviews. First we filmed interviews with his Mum and Step Mum then after a couple of hours waiting around we went to his Sisters to film an interview there. The problem came that Richard never knew where she lived so we spent almost an hour just getting to the house, eventually we got there and done the interview and then we called it done for the day.

29/11/14
Today was my turn for getting my interviews done, we got all the interviews complete with only one minor difficulty which was, the boom mic not working properly. We  done some cutaways around the house and then spent a few hours on the Xbox waiting for my Dad to come home to do School cutaways to find out that he was too tired and hungry to do it so we called it done for the day.

01/12/14
After attempting vox pops and not getting anywhere for so long we decided to give it one more try today, I went on a spree asking people without losing confidence once, I asked 8 people all together and not a single one said yes so we once again gave up with them for the day, we instead done some more cutaways. Then I filmed my final interview in the same location as Liam and Richard with Alex. After the interview we captured todays footage and finished for the day.

04/12/14
Today I was checking through my footage and Neil seen the interviews done in the green room and disliked the background so I went out to the Infinity Bridge to refilm them, after getting the better footage I captured them made sure they looked good and then finished for the day.

06/12/14
Today we caught up with my cutaways and filmed at the School which was complete in an hour and then we finished it.

Post-Production
8/12/14-18/12/14
After getting all of my footage captured I began post-production by organizing my vox pops question. I then spent a lot of my time doing other things and then later that week I continued my editing and created the structure of it. After I created the base structure Kelly watched it over and gave me feedback on things to improve. I made some final changes to the structure of it ready for the rough cut screening

Soundtrack
Recording The Sound:
The interviews for Richard's documentary were done using the Lapel Microphones (Clip-on Microphones). We only used one mic on his interviewees as his plan is to do his questions in voiceover. The sound quality came out quite good with the Lapel Mics.

Post-Production Sound:
For the sound I used audio gain on Adobe Premier Pro to lower some of the audio and gain some.

In some of my interviews the interviewees were on the left or right side of the screen so using Adobe Audition I turned the Audio into Mono sound and changed the audio to coming out of the respective side of the interviewee.
